Teaching Practice Phase 1 : Day 1

This day marked the commencement of a new phase in our B.Ed journey, which is none other than the crux of the course namely teaching practice.  The day enriched me with new experiences both good and bitter ones. We, the teacher trainees from GCTE Thyacuad as well as the trainees from other colleges were not alloted any proper place to settle down ourselves and our teaching tools at GGHSS, Manacaud. We had to adjust ourselves in a dilapidated stage without even a ceiling fan , that too in the extreme hot weather conditions. We had to carry desks and benches on our own from the auditorium to the stage alloted to us , only to ultimately see them being carried away to different classrooms by the students who claim these to be belonging to their class. We were really disappointed and had to carry over more seats.

I got the lesson plans for today's classes signed by my supervising teachers, Daniel sir and Manju ma'am in the morning itself. I had to engage three periods today , two periods for class 9F and one period for 8E.
I took both the classes with the help of powerpoint slides projected on white screen. The pupils themselves taught me how to connect my laptop to the projector and I learnt the same from them. I took the lesson "Rosa Parks Sat Still" for the 8th standard students who were very receptive to the teaching-learning process. They actively responded to the comprehension questions and were ready to do class activities.  But I could not make them complete the task of short dialogue writing in class , due to time constraints and improper planning. I also had to skip the step of silent reading from the part of learners to keep up the time. Comparatively,  8th standard students were disciplined and the class management was no big deal. However this was not the case with 9F students. The class was really chaotic, with a few pupils scarcely paying attention.  I tried to involve them in the learning process through the use of ICT and by asking simple questions and giving prompts but to no avail. They kept on disturbing the class as a whole, even passed deregoratory comments on me and laughed.  I did not take it to heart because it was much expected with Manju ma'am having given prior warnings. I hope I could come up with better strategies to help them develop interest in English language learning.  Added to the chaos within, loud noises could be heard from the adjacent classes which further disrupted the class. I had to raise my volume to the maximum level which was really strainful, that too for two periods.  I handled the transcript of Leonardo DeCaprio's speech 'Climate change is not hysteria' in the class. I tried sharing the original video of the speech but it was not audible. I could not manage to get a bluetooth speaker , so ultimately dropped the plan. Manju teacher tried to help me find one from the school but she too couldn't.

The first day of teaching practice was tiresome for all of us , yet was an enriching experience.
