Teaching Practice Phase 2: Day 28
I took the rest of the poem 'Marvellous Travel' in 8f class today during the second period. The learners could recall the content dealt with in the previous class.I took the last two stanzas of the poem there and explained the unfamiliar words using ICT resources. I gave time for the learners to take down the meanings of these words in their note books. A discussion was initiated on the topic 'how to travel without money' and the learners came up with a wide range of ideas like hitchhiking, packing homely food, carrying items for cooking and cooking on the roadside, travelling by electric vehicles at low cost, carrying tents and camping in allowed places, halting at friends' and relatives' houses and so on. Majority of the students were given a chance to express their view points regarding the topic.
The discourse given in class was regarding the formulation of a travel plan with friends. Activities sheets were given so that the pupils could discuss and fill in the details regarding the destination of the travel, places to visit, hotels to stay, modes of transportation, date and time of travel, estimated budget and additional notes, if any. Many students mistakenly filled the notes section with reflections in the wake of the travel and I corrected their misunderstanding. The class was really difficult to manage than usual when the pupils were immersed in the activity. I really had to strain my voice to maintain class discipline. Despite repeated instructions, the students did not lower their voice. It seemed that they already set out on the journey they were planning. The students were too much excited to have self discipline.
During the lunch break after the learners finished their lunch, I distributed the answer sheets of the achievement test which was conducted last Friday.
Then I discussed the key points and answers for each question. I also distributed notes on the poem 'Marvellous Travel'. I asked the learners to revise and practice the topic 'question tag' at home. During the fifth and sixth periods, I accompanied Gayathri to 8d class and monitored the students while she was writing down the questions for the achievement test on the blackboard.
