World Environment Day celebration 2023
Every day, we make decisions that have an impact on the environment, the climate, and many animals. There are numerous things we can do to "choose wild" and minimise our environmental impact to provide more space for wild animals and plants, from what we eat to the products we use.
World Environment Day is marked on June 5 every year with the motive to shed light on the awful predicament that modern humanity faces. People have become accustomed to eating microplastics, breathing polluted air, and watching as other life forms are pushed onto the brink of extinction.
The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden, from June 5–16, 1972, is where World Environment Day got its start. World leaders and delegates resolved to create World Environment Day to promote awareness and action during this summit in recognition of the urgent need to address environmental concerns.
Since the 5th of June 1972, a new environmental topic has been emphasised to discuss and focus on so that that particular issue can be resolved as soon as possible. These have covered topics such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, sustainable consumption, and renewable energy.
Communities, organisations, governments, and individuals from all around the world have joined forces to create World Environment Day, which is now a truly global movement. It inspires people and communities to take action for the welfare of the earth by serving as a catalyst for environmental projects, regulatory changes, and public awareness campaigns.
The theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 focuses on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.
The world is being engulfed by plastic. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that also, less than 10 percent is recycled. Today, plastic is one of the biggest threats to the planet.
World Environment Day 2023 is hosted by Cote d'Ivoire in partnership with the Netherlands, which pledges to find solutions to plastic pollution.
