Pride Month is an annual celebration observed in June to honor the LGBTQ+ community, promote equality, and raise awareness about the challenges and achievements of LGBTQ+ individuals.Pride Month originated from the 1969 Stonewall riots, a series of protests for gay liberation that started on June 28. Over time, it has expanded beyond the United States and is now celebrated worldwide. In 1999 and 2000, President Bill Clinton became the first US President to officially acknowledge Pride Month. Then, in 2016, President Barack Obama designated the location of the historic 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City as a national monument, making it the first to recognize the contributions of gay Americans.


The History

In New York City on June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village. In response, bar patrons, staff, and residents of the neighborhood took to the streets of Christopher Street and engaged in rioting. Leading the movement significantly was Marsha P. Johnson, a black, trans, bisexual woman, who played a significant role in organizing protests and clashes that lasted for six days. The protesters all in all demanded safe spaces for LGBT+ individuals to openly express their sexual orientation without the fear of arrest.

Bisexual activist Brenda Howard, popularly known as ‘The Mother of Pride,’ is widely credited with initiating Pride Month. A year after the Stonewall Riots, Brenda organized Gay Pride Week and the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade, which later evolved into the New York City Pride March. This event subsequently acted as a spark for the organization of marches and parades of a similar nature all over the world.

The Timeline

1924: World War I veteran Henry Gerber founded the first gay rights organization in the United States.
1969: Stonewall Riots took place, lasting for 6 days
1970: The first Pride Parade, known as the “Gay Liberation March,” happened on the streets of New York City.
1978: The original design of the rainbow gay pride flag, created by Gilbert Baker, was proudly flown at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade.
1994: Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender History Month is officially recognized in October.
1999: Bill Clinton, as the President, officially recognized Gay & Lesbian Pride Month.
1999: Kolkata hosted India’s first-ever Pride Parade.
2016: By designating it as a national monument, President Barack Obama recognized the significance of the Stonewall Inn in the LGBTQ+ rights struggle.
2018: The Supreme Court of India decriminalized consensual same-sex relationships by striking down Section 377.

Pride Month every year emphatically revolves around a specific theme to encourage people to engage in discussions and raise awareness about ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. The theme for Pride Month 2023 is “Rage and Resilience,” reflecting the current global climate with the resurgence of anti-LGBT bills and laws.

In India, in 2014, transgender individuals were officially recognized as a “third gender,” and in 2017, the Supreme Court recognized sexual orientation as protected under the fundamental right to privacy. Following this, a revolutionary ruling struck down a colonial-era law and decriminalized homosexuality in 2018. In 2022, the top court ruled that unmarried or same-sex couples were entitled to welfare benefits. Furthermore, in 2023 and the Supreme Court is actively hearing petitions that seek to legally validate same-sex marriages.

Department of English GCTE in association with Women's Cell celebrated Pride month at General Hall 2 of the college. I have got the opportunity to compere the event. The programme began with a prayer song by Jessy, followed by news reading by Kavya Sagar. Bushra Ansary expounded on the Pride Month right from its inception to its current significance. Bhagya Murali expressed her take on the statement 'Love has no gender' drawing even the instance of the greatest dramatists of all times William Shakespeare being labelled a bisexual.The programme came to an end with reflections delivered by Ms. Anju, Assistant Professor,  Department of Physical Science;  and Ms.Rehna Hussain from 1st year M.Ed who shared their experiences, comments and feedback on the programme.

I engaged two periods for 8E class today. Since the lesson 'The Nightingale and the Rose' was completed, I gave the learners a few activities based on the same. A story board completion chart was displayed and the learners were randomly called to complete it. After the task, the teacher confirmed the answers and cleared doubts.  I also made the learners do a passage editing activity and error correction activity. During the last period, I conducted a test for them on the poem 'The Sower'. The examination was held for 15 marks and for thirty minutes duration. Since I could not take print outs of the question paper, I wrote down the questions on the board and asked the learners to write down the answers.  After collecting the answer sheets, I asked the pupils to complete a few activities,  including poster making activity given in their English Reader and submit the works by Monday.

Teaching Practice: Phase 1 : Day 25

I engaged two periods for 9F today and completed the story 'The Last Leaf' for them. Then I gave necessary instructions to them so that they could complete the textual exercises on their own. I asked the pupils to come up with alternative titles for the lesson . I also dictated to them notes on the poem 'On Killing a Tree' which they took down in their notebooks.  For 8E class, I continued with the story 'A Day in the Country' using vocabulary and powerpoint slides as aid. I had to rush the lesson a bit since their portions were pending and revision classes were about to begin prior to the Christmas examination.  Preparations for the upcoming state-level vocational fests have already begun. My fellow teacher trainees took Physical Education classes during the second and third periods. Teaching Practice Phase 2: Day 28

I took the rest of the poem 'Marvellous Travel' in 8f class today during the second period. The learners could recall the content dealt with in the previous class.I took the last two stanzas  of the poem there and explained the unfamiliar words using ICT resources. I gave time for the learners to take down the meanings of these words in their note books. A discussion was initiated on the topic 'how to travel without money' and the learners came up with a wide range of ideas like hitchhiking, packing homely food, carrying items for cooking and cooking on the roadside,  travelling by electric vehicles at low cost, carrying tents and camping in allowed places, halting at friends' and relatives' houses and so on.
