The Jolly Hollies 2022

"I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Thus sang the American poet Henry Wadsworth Long fellow.
Christmas was traditionally a Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus, but in the early 20th century, it also became a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike.Popular customs of Christmas  include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive.

GCTE Thycaud too celebrated Christmas on 22nd December, 2022. The whole Christmas celebration " The Jolly Hollies 2022" was planned, organised and executed by the first year B.Ed students. As part of celebrating this, Government College of Teacher Education organized the Christmas celebration, Jolly Hollies 2022 on December 22 at the UGC Hall. The program was initiated by our anchor Ms. Jessy. M and it made its official inception with an invocation done by Ms. Maria George. Ms. Sandya pronounced the Welcome speech.

Dr. V. K. Santhosh Kumar, the principal and general convenor of the program delivered the presidential address in which he recollected some memories related to Christmas and he wished all the teachers, non-teachers and student teachers a blessed Christmas and joyous 2023 ahead. The chief guest of the day was Rev. Fr. Sunil. M. John, Vicar, Salem Marthoma Church, Vazhuthacaud who lighted the ceremonial candle and officially inaugurated the Jolly Hollies 2022. Following this the chief guest delivered the inaugural address in which he integrated the ideas of family, friendship, love, sacrifice and purity. He wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Inorder to highlight the humble background of Christ's birth and uobringing, the representation of the Scene of the nativity or Christmas Crib, an age old tradition, was recreated by the first semester B.Ed. students of GCTE, from available resources. The North Pole star which the three wise men called the Magi followed to bring gifts to the new born Jesus, often represented in the form of a star, was also prepared by the student teachers and hung in the courtyard of the college. Following the inaugural address, the Santa Clauss of GCTE, impersonated by Ms. Kavya Sagar, came with a bag full of gifts and gave them away to everyone.  She also performed an energetic dance and became a heart-throb.  In England, the tradition of Christmas cake began as plum porridge. The Christmas cake today is symbolised as a ritual of Christmas Celebration. The happiness, love and joy of the season and that of Jolly Hollies 2022 was unrolled by the cutting of Christmas Cake by the chief guest Fr. Sunil, our principal and Santa Claus. A token of our love was handed over to Fr. Sunil by the principal Dr. V.K. Santhosh Kumar.Dr. Joly. S, Vice principal of GCTE; Dr. Issac Paul, Associate professor, department of commerce; Manoj Kumar, the superintendent of GCTE; Mr. Praveen Kumar, the chairman of the college union, Mr. Vishnu. The formal function came to an end with Ms. Sibana delivering the vote of thanks.  Cultural programs, games and treasure hunt ensued. The student teachers of first semester B.Ed. showcased their talents by singing carol songs and performing dance numbers. The M.Ed. trainees too became the cynosure of our eyes with their rendition of a dance performance. Fun-filled games were also in store for the spectators. Following this a nativity play was performed by the students of First semester B.Ed under the direction of Ms.Maria. A treasure hunt was organised by the College Union members to add to the mirth of the celebration. The programme wound up at 5pm.
