Teaching Practice Phase 2: Day 22

I had no morning duty today. However I got substitution in 7G class during the first period. The class organisation, embellishment and student discipline impressed me and in themselves became the topic of discussion with the learners. There was a well kept reading corner along with the display of posters and models.
During the second period I got substitution in 8f class. I took an activity oriented class focusing on speaking skill. The students were made to draft speeches from the perspective of the sailor Velasco sharing his experience in a public meeting and from the perspective of a speaker congratulating him on his survival. When I asked whether the pupils could present their written speeches without looking at the drafts, almost all of them were reluctant to do so. Kaveri V Sanu, the class leader finally stepped forward to deliver the speech without glancing at the draft prepared by her team. Though she stammered frequently and made self corrections of grammatical errors, she managed to deliver the speech following all the essential features of a good oration like voice modulation, eye contact and using appropriate gestures . I appreciated her for her good attempt and for setting a model for the others to follow. The final activity of the period was regarding the drafting of 10 interview questions and their corresponding answers. The learners had to imagine that they were interviewing the survivor of the shipreck Velasco. They were reminded of the emotionally charged situation and were enjoined to draft the interview questions carefully taking cues from the video played earlier which was regarding the interview given by one of the real survivors of the Titanic shipwreck. The learners were more confident in presenting the interview scripts in front of the class in pairs.
During my regular period from 11: 50 to 12: 30 p.m. I engaged yet another activity class for the learners, this time on converting given sentences to news headlines and develop news stories. They presented breaking news headlines also, imagining themselves to be reporters of television channels, related to the shipwreck in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's story. I gave necessary feedbacks to all the groups. Though the learners were first lacking in confidence to speak in English before the class I could see at least an iota of improvement in them with more and more exposure to the target language in the course of the two periods.
I spent the afternoon preparing the soft copy of the achievement test question paper which I plan to get signed by my concerned teacher on Monday. I took the discipline duty after the national anthem and left the school.
