Teaching Practice: Phase 1: Day 18
I engaged two repeat classes for 9H students, as enjoined by Manju ma'am. I completed the lesson 'The Jungle Air Crash' there. In the evening, I went to my college to meet Omanasheelan sir. He gave me deep insights regarding pedagogical practice that is engaging and effective. He asked me to indulge the pupils in two model readings: one without their texts opened and one with their texts opened. He suggested writing all the comprehension questions that are asked in the course of a class on chart papers or powerpoint slides.
Sir asked me to take care of the posture, pace and repetition in class. Mass answering should be abated and the same point should be uttered in the class thrice. After dividing the students into groups, group leaders have to be selected by the learners from among themselves. The completed activity cards have to be stuck by the teacher on a separate chart and the leaders should be made to present their answers.
The teacher should acknowledge the answers given by all groups. Then the teacher presents her own version of the answers, saying that she is simply consolidating all of their responses. This needs to be followed by the provision of the assignment question.
Though the pedagogical practice introduced by Omanasheelan sir is very effective from the perspectives of both teachers and pupils, it does not seem feasible at all in actual classroom situation, due to time constraints. A teacher can cover only a single paragraph of a lesson if ever he/she follows the aforesaid pedagogy. Therefore it is difficult to implement this pedagogic practice in our class, particularly when the school teachers insist on completely the portions as fast as possible and begin revisions.
