School Induction: Day 2
The second day of the school induction programme, 5th January 2023, bore testimony to us, the first semester B.Ed student teachers of GCTE, appearing at Govt Girls HSS, Peroorkada at 9am with renewed hope.Since it was Thursday, the day devoted to school general assembly along with Monday, we had a chance to witness the students there organising and conducting the assembly. The assembly was held at the school auditorium. It began with a prayer sung by a group of students, followed by the rendition of the National Pledge in Malayalam. News reading ensued to make the students aware of the day-to-day happenings but I think it could have been more elaborate. The recitation of a Malayalam poem as the special programme added colour to the whole assembly. The headmistress of the school, Ms. Pushpa George addressed the gathering and made some general announcements. The assembly came to an end with the recital of the National Anthem. Most of the students seemed to be restless and talkative during the assembly, paying scant regard to the happenings on stage.
We had prepared a lesson plan on the topic "The Happiness Machine" as we were alloted the same the day before , to be taught in Std IX B during the fourth hour. Unexpectedly we were asked to take the same portion for Std IX C during the second hour. Thus we ventured into our maiden teaching practice in the school during the second hour. Ms. Arya from the Department of English, St Thomas College introduced herself in the class since she will be engaging further classes for them as a part of her teaching practice programme. She then left the class for us, myself and Ms. Jessy, while she herself retired to observe our classes. Ms. Jessy M greeted the students and covered the introductory part of the lesson "The Happiness Machine" whereas I has dealt with the first three paragraphs of the same lesson and concluded the class.
Since the same topic was handled in the 4th hour, things were easy for us as we already had the lesson plan for the topic. The fourth hour class wound up with the enactment of a role play by two students based on the topic discussed.I felt that the students of Class IX C were more active when compared to those of Class IX B.After the lunch break we approached the headmistress Ms. Pushpa and gathered information regarding various documents maintained at the school. We then took photos with the headmistress and left the school after the National Anthem.
