Orientation for School Induction

"Teachers can change lives with the right mix of chalk and challenges," thus said Joyce Meyer. The first year B.Ed student teachers of GCTE  have been posed with the maiden task of fulfilling the aforesaid role by  visiting a school for the induction programme for a week on the month of January. Orientation for the same have been provided by our teachers prior to the same, on December  21st at the Research Room of the college.Classroom discourses mould the future of a nation. The teaching community is expected to play a seminal role in making education a  qualitative one, for which proper teaching training should be enjoined. Thus emphasis has been laid upon  teacher education by all societies  throughout the world. Earlier, developing subject matter competency and pruning teaching skills in a specific subject formed the essence of teacher training programs. But with the advent of science and technology and increasing  globalisation, educational practices have undergone upheavals throughout the world to meet the challenges of the present times.
Teacher education has to function as a professional learning under a global canvas. This requires an education system that adopts a comprehensive  approach to developing the full potential of individuals. The initiatory school experience aims at providing  the student-teacher an opportunity to have primary experiences with the functioning of the school. The school induction programme is meant  for a period of five continuous working days. The student teachers will have to  acquaint themselves with the  environment and  day-to- day functioning of the schools they have selected. Observation of lessons of senior teachers individually or in small groups  , meeting the students informally to learn their background and interest in learning, to see the learning facilities in the school, observing the social climate in the school, etc are some of the activities to be undertaken during this period. Each student-teacher has to engage three lessons individually or as shared practice. In Shared Practice, student-teachers will be in small groups of two or three members. The lessons will be divided into  parts and each student teacher will practice one of the parts by rotation in the natural classroom situation. Lesson plans may or may not be prepared for the same. The student-teachers have to maintain a detailed diary or reflective journal as record of the visit. After the initiatory school experiences, a reflection session will be organised in the college. Since it was decided that  school induction programme shall be held  from 3rd January 2023 to 7th January 2023 , an orientation programme was conducted on 21 December 2022. Dr.Isaac Paul, Dr. Joly , Dr.Jayakrishna ,Ms. Sheena Elizabeth,  Ms.Chitralekha , Ms. Asha , Dr.Praveena M, Ms. Shiba and Mr.Jithin Prem gave us general instructions and necessary encouragement  for the induction programme. Ms. Shiba was the coordinator of the programme and Ms. Parvathy the student coordinator.
